Padres Sign RHP Jered Weaver to One-Year Contract for 2017
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced the club has signed right-handed pitcher Jered Weaver to a one-year Major League contract for the 2017 season. In a corresponding move, the club has placed RHP Colin Rea on the 60-day DL. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.
Weaver, 34, went 12-12 with a 5.06 ERA (100 ER, 178.0 IP) and 103 strikeouts against 51 walks with a .297 (209-for-704) opponent batting average over 31 games, all starts, for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2016. The three-time All-Star (2010-12) has spent his entire 11-year career with the Angles and owns a .617 career winning percentage (150-93), which ranks second in Angels franchise history and tied for 10th among all active starting pitchers (min. 100 starts). The 6-7, 210-pound right-hander has compiled a career 3.55 ERA (798 ER, 2025.0 IP) with 1,598 strikeouts against 539 walks and a .243 (1861-for-7666) opponent batting average over 322 games, all starts. The Northridge, Calif., native has made seven postseason appearances, four starts, and compiled a 2-1 record with a 2.60 ERA (8 ER, 27.2 IP) and 28 strikeouts against 12 walks with a .160 (15-for-94) opponent batting average.
