Texas Rangers 2017 Winter Caravan travels to Fort Worth on January 27

The 2017 Texas Rangers Winter Caravan will travel to Kirkaptrick Middle School and YMCA Sports Complex in Fort Worth for a pair of grant presentations today, Friday, January 27.

 

Participating in the grant presentations will be pitchers AJ Griffin and Tanner Scheppers. Manager Jeff Banister will join the Caravan for an autograph signing at Academy Sports + Outdoors in the evening.

 

The Rangers schedule at Kirkpatrick Middle School:

3:00-4:00 p.m. - Grant Presentation for the Fort Worth ISD Foundation at Kirkpatrick Middle School, 3201 Refugio Avenue, Fort Worth, TX 76106

 

The Globe Life And Accident Insurance Company and the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation will present a $5,000 grant to Kirkpatrick Middle School. The funds will be used for supplies and equipment for a new baseball team at Kirkpatrick Middle School.

 

The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation instituted the Grant Program to 2012 as another means to promote the growth and development of youth baseball and softball. As part of its partnership with the Rangers, Globe Life is making a substantial commitment to support youth baseball and softball programs in the Rangers' five-state territory by joining with the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation in the grant partnership program.

 

Kirkpatrick Middle School Principal Nick Torrez and teacher Michael Steel will join Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation Executive Director Karin Morris and the Rangers caravan participants in the presentation.

Members of the Rangers caravan will be available for interviews.

4:30-5:15 p.m. - Grant Presentation for YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth at YMCA Sports Complex, 4320 Altamesa Boulevard, Fort Worth TX 76132

FORTH WORTH CARAVAN PARTICIPANTS

 

AJ GRIFFIN (RHP) - Returned to the majors in 2016 after a 2-year absence and went 7-4 with a 5.07 ERA (67 ER/119.0 IP) over 23 starts…won the 5th spot in the rotation as a non-roster invite in spring training…missed all of 2014-15 after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow…won season debut, earning 1st ML victory since 9/12/13 at MIN, a span of 939 days... with victory on April 8 at LAA, became the 1st ML pitcher to start 15 or more games, then not pitch in the majors for at least the next 2 full seasons, and then win one of his team's 1st 5 games in his first season back in the majors since CAL's Rudy May on 4/12/69 vs. MIN, according to STATS, Inc…allowed one run in 8.0 IP on 4/26 vs. NYY, joining Yu Darvish (8.1 IP, 0 R on 4/24/12) and Cliff Lee (8.0 IP, 1 R-ER on 9/12/10) as the only Texas starters with an outing of 8.0+ innings while allowing one-or-zero runs against the Yankees in Arlington over the past 20 seasons…Rangers were 16-7 (.696) in his 23 starts, 7th-best win percentage among qualifying A.L. starters.

TANNER SCHEPPERS (RHP) - Opened the season on the disabled list after undergoing microfracture surgery on his left knee in February 2016…returned in early September, going 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA (4 ER/8.2 IP) in 10 relief appearances for Texas…his 10 games from 9/7-end of season were tied with Matt Bush for most on Texas staff… in 7 of the 10 games, entered with the game tied or a single-run margin either way…stranded 8 of 9 inherited runners…finished 5 games and had 2 holds…outing on 9/7 at SEA was 1st in majors since 9/28/15 vs. DET…earned win 9/10 at LAA, his first win since 7/22/15 at COL and the first Texas pitcher to win a game with one batter faced since Alexi Ogando, 4/22/14 vs. OAK…earned his third career save on 9/13 at HOU, first since 8/6/13 at LAA…pitched 2.1 SHO IP on 9/21 vs. LAA, longest relief outing of his career.

JEFF BANISTER - Named the 18th full-time manager in Rangers history on October 16, 2014, Banister has guided Texas to consecutive A.L. West Division titles in 2015 and 2016, becoming just the fourth manager to capture division crowns in his first two seasons as a major league manager since the start of three-division play in 1994…is the only ML skipper to win division titles in both 2015 and 2016…has posted a 183-141 (.565) record in his 2 seasons as the Rangers' manager…guided the Rangers to a 95-67 (.586) record in 2016, the best in the American League and tied with the Nationals (95-67) for second in the majors behind the Cubs at .640 (103-58)…was the first time in franchise history that the club had the A.L.'s best record…matched 1999 (95-67) for the second best mark in team history.
