Indians invite Austin Jackson to Major League camp
The Cleveland Indians today announced the following roster moves relative to the 2017 Spring Training roster:
- Signed free agent OF Austin Jackson (#26) to a Minor League contract with a non-roster invitation to Major League spring training camp.
Jackson, who turns 30 on February 1, owns a career Major League batting average of .272 (971-3573) with 182 doubles, 49 triples, 55 home runs and 314 RBI in 914 games (.332/.396/.728) over a seven-year career with the Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox. The Denton, Texas native has appeared in 40 Postseason games with the Tigers and Cubs and has primarily manned centerfield throughout his career, leading the American League in defensive WAR in 2011 (3.4, Baseball-Reference). He led the A.L. in triples with Detroit in 2011 (11) and 2012 (10) and was the A.L. Rookie of the Year runner-up in 2010.
He spent the 2016 season with the Chicago White Sox, hitting .254 (46-181) with 12 2B, 2 3B & 18 RBI in 54 games, including a mark of .364 (16-44) with runners in scoring position. He did not play after June 9 due to a torn meniscus in his left knee that required arthroscopic surgery.
