MINNEAPOLIS -- Since opening in 2010, Target Field has welcomed musical acts such as Paul McCartney, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney and the Zac Brown Band. It will add to that list when the Twins host legendary musician Billy Joel on July 28, marking his first concert in a Minnesota outdoor stadium.
The Twins made the announcement Thursday in a news conference at Target Field featuring president Dave St. Peter, manager Paul Molitor and first baseman Joe Mauer. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Jan. 20 at 10 a.m. CT, while American Express cardholders have access to a presale that starts Monday at 10 a.m.
"It is an absolute honor for the Minnesota Twins and Target Field to host a legend like Billy Joel," St. Peter said. "This is our eighth year at Target Field and our seventh major show. So as much as we think it's the best place to watch baseball, we feel like in the Midwest, it's the best concert venue, bar none."
Molitor, a noted music fan with a personalized Bruce Springsteen-signed guitar in his office, took the podium with quips referencing several of Joel's hits such as "The Longest Time," "Big Shot," "My Life," "Uptown Girl" and "Piano Man."
"I know for Billy Joel fans, you've been waiting 'The Longest Time' to hear this announcement about the first-ever outdoor concert for Billy in Minnesota," Molitor said. "In 'My Life' I've been fortunate enough to be around some 'Big Shots,' and Billy definitely ranks in that category."
Joel, who scored 33 straight Top 40 hits and has sold more than 150 million records, will visit Minnesota as part of a multicity tour that includes stops at several other Major League ballparks. Joel, 67, is also scheduled to perform at Atlanta's SunTrust Park in April, Cleveland's Progressive Field in July, Chicago's Wrigley Field and Boston's Fenway Park in August and Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park in September.
It's far from Joel's first visit to Minnesota, however, as he's played the neighboring Target Center 10 times, drawing nearly a combined 200,000 fans.
"The Target Field concert experience has proven to be among the best in the region, and we are thrilled to welcome Billy Joel, one of the most respected and endearing global recording artists in history," Twins chief business officer Laura Day said. "We expect this to be another amazing outdoor music experience in Twins Territory."
