The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) have agreed to terms with RHP Fernando Rodney (@F_Rodney56) on a 1-year contract. The 39-year-old is a 3-time All-Star (2012, '14, '16) and ranks fifth among active relievers with 261 saves and 767 appearances. He led the Majors with 48 saves in 2014. In 2012, he was named Major League Baseball's Delivery Man of the Year and Comeback Player of the Year after posting a 0.60 ERA (5 ER in 74.2 IP), which was the lowest mark by a relief pitcher in history.
"With Fernando, we're getting an established Major League closer and a veteran presence in the bullpen," Hazen said. "It is helpful to have someone with his experience on the back end to slow the game down and get the final 3 outs."
Rodney split the 2016 season between the San Diego Padres and Miami Marlins, going 2-4 with 25 saves, a 3.44 ERA (25 ER in 65.1 IP) and 74 strikeouts, earning a spot on the NL All-Star Team. He has spent parts of 14 Major League seasons (2002-03, '05-) with the Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels, Tampa Bay Rays, Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs, Padres and Marlins.
