Tabata's status is uncertain, the team stated in a release, though the Pirates have opted not to put Tabata on the disabled list at this time. While the club could get by one position player short for a few days, Tabata would likely go on the DL if he is going to be sidelined much past the team's upcoming three-game series in Toronto.
In addition, the Pirates confirmed that outfielder Alex Presley is scheduled to join the club in Toronto on Tuesday. Recalling Presley from Triple-A will give the Pirates an additional outfielder, as well as a bat to plug into the designated hitter spot. Through Sunday, Presley led the International League with 98 hits in 75 games.
To clear a spot on the roster for Presley, the Pirates optioned rarely used infielder Pedro Ciriaco back to Indianapolis. The move means the Pirates will be down to one backup infielder, but that will be temporary. The club is expected to recall infielder Josh Harrison on Sunday, after he has spent the mandatory 10 days in the Minors.
