Phils to likely focus on small deals at Meetings

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. -- There is plenty of speculation about plenty of players and teams entering this week's Winter Meetings at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center.

The Phillies are not one of those teams because they were relatively busy last month. They acquired left fielder Howie Kendrick and right-hander Pat Neshek in trades with the Dodgers and Astros, respectively. Jeremy Hellickson accepted the team's one-year, $17.2 million qualifying offer. They offered salary arbitration to Freddy Galvis, Cesar Hernandez and Jeanmar Gomez. And they protected 11 prospects from Thursday's Rule 5 Draft, placing them on the 40-man roster.

So if the Phillies are going to make any moves this week, they figure to be of the more minor variety.

Maybe a utility infielder.

Maybe a relief pitcher.

Maybe an extra outfielder.

Of course, the Phillies are open-minded. If the right team puts together the right package of talent for one of the Phillies' young players, they most certainly will consider it.

But that remains to be seen. So check throughout the week for the latest rumblings about the Phillies, including coverage of manager Pete Mackanin's news conference at 3:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday. and MLB Network will have wall-to-wall coverage of the 2016 Winter Meetings from the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center outside Washington, D.C.
