Mariners release catcher Steven Baron

Baron was designated for assignment on November 2

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the club has released catcher Steven Baron.

With today's transaction, the Mariners Major League 40-man roster remains at 36 players.

Baron, 25, was designated for assignment on Nov. 2 to make room on the roster for Ryan Weber. Baron hit .280 (65x232) with 35 runs, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 22 RBI, 34 walks and 3 stolen bases in 67 games with AA Jackson this season. He also appeared in 1 game with AAA Tacoma (June 30-July 1). In eight minor league seasons with the Mariners, Baron hit .234 (464x1982) with 222 runs, 108 doubles, 13 triples, 26 home runs and 228 RBI in 554 games. He was originally drafted by Seattle in the 1st round (33rd overall) of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of John A. Ferguson School in Miami, FL.
