Banister to take part in NASCAR's Texas 500

ARLINGTON -- Rangers manager Jeff Banister will serve as the honorary pace car driver for Sunday's Texas 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway.

The Texas 500 is part of NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup with 40 drivers competing including the Round of 8 championship contenders. The race is scheduled for a 1 p.m. CT start in Fort Worth. Banister will have a practice session in the morning.

"I am honored to be the honorary pace car driver for the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway," Banister said. "NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup is coming down to the final weeks, and I am really looking forward to be a part of this exciting event."

Banister is the third member of the Rangers organization to serve as honorary pace car driver. Pitcher C.J. Wilson did so in 2010 and Derek Holland in 2014.

Banister just completed his second season as Rangers manager. He led them to a 95-67 record and a first-place finish in the American League West this season before losing to the Blue Jays in the AL Division Series. Texas has won two straight division titles under Banister.
