Francona is Sporting News' AL Manager of Year

Indians skipper Terry Francona has been named Sporting News' American League Manager of the Year, as selected by a panel of 29 Major League managers.

Francona, 57, leads the Indians into their first World Series since 1997 tonight, looking for the club's first championship since 1948. Cleveland won 94 games this year, while capturing its first AL Central title since 2007.

Francona earned the award with eight votes. Yankees manager Joe Girardi finished second with four.

Other Indians managers to win the award include Mike Hargrove (1995) and Eric Wedge (2007).
