A-Rod could achieve All-Star first

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez has been at the center of some remarkable feats through the course of his career, but he has never been the leading vote-getter for an All-Star Game.

Could this be the year?

Voters for the All-Star Game have found A-Rod's remarkable offensive season too hot to ignore, as he has amassed more ballot punches and MLB.com clicks than any other Major Leaguer for this year's Midsummer Classic on July 10 in San Francisco.

"I won't lie to you, it'd be pretty cool," Rodriguez said. "It's kind of a very humbling thing, playing in New York and representing a great city and baseball town. It's pretty cool. I've been close a few times, but to be No. 1 would be pretty special."

Also in the middle of a terrific offensive season, captain Derek Jeter continues to lead all American League shortstops and appears well on his way to returning to San Francisco for what would be his eighth time representing the American League.

Catcher Jorge Posada has arguably been the club's most indispensable player, providing league-leading offense at the plate and a steady demeanor behind it. He's still in need of more ballots to get to the show, though, moving past Boston's Jason Varitek and Minnesota's Joe Mauer but residing in second place behind Detroit's Ivan Rodriguez in a four-headed chase to catch for the Junior Circuit.

Meanwhile, second baseman Robinson Cano continues to trail after a red-hot start in the voting. Detroit's Placido Polanco has moved ahead and appears on his way to the West Coast, unless Cano can surge and make up the slack.

Fans can cast their votes for starters up to 25 times through the Monster 2007 All-Star Online Ballot at MLB.com and all 30 club sites until Thursday at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Fans will again be given the opportunity to cast an All-Star vote immediately following the 2007 MLB All-Star Game Selection Show Presented by Chevrolet, which will be televised by Turner Sports on Sunday. Baseball fans around the world will be able to select the final player on each All-Star team through the Monster.com 2007 All-Star Final Vote.

Selecting the 2007 rosters isn't the end of the fun, either. Concluding the All-Star balloting process, fans will have the opportunity to participate in the official voting for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player presented by Chevrolet at the All-Star Game through the Monster.com 2007 All-Star Game MVP Vote at MLB.com.

All-Star Game Coverage

The All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports and around the world by Major League Baseball International. ESPN Radio will provide exclusive national radio coverage, MLB.com will offer extensive online coverage and MLB Radio will have exclusive play-by-play coverage of the game on the Internet.

Several other Yankees could use a few more clicks on the Internet, with the deadline for Yankee Stadium balloting having already passed.

The AL outfield, if balloting ended now, would not feature a starting New York player, with Los Angeles' Vladimir Guerrero, Detroit's Magglio Ordonez and Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki at the front of the pack. Bobby Abreu and Johnny Damon are the closest Yankees, ranking eighth and ninth among AL outfielders, respectively.
