Guillen named AL Player of the Week

|
After going 10-for-21, good for a .476 batting average over the last week, Detroit Tigers shortstop Carlos Guillen was named the Bank of America Presents American League Player of the Week.

"It's nice, I feel great," Guillen said. "It always feels better when you play good."

Guillen posted a 1.048 slugging percentage over the week, smacking three doubles and three home runs as he drove in 11 runs and scored eight of his own.

He is the third Tiger in as many weeks to either win or share the AL Player of the Week honors, as Gary Sheffield and Alex Rodriguez were both chosen on June 11, and Justin Verlander won the following week after going 2-0, including his no-hitter.

Guillen, an All-Star in 2004, is hitting .324 on the year with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs. The 31-year-old had a big Interleague series with the Washington Nationals, going 6-for-12 with a pair of homers and seven runs driven in.

He has been dealing with some minor hamstring and groin injuries recently, but seems to have gotten healthy and is taking off.

"Sometimes, you try to do too much," Guillen said. "I just try to be Carlos Guillen. I've been 100 percent at times over the past two years and haven't been Player of the Week."

He finished his strong week with a 2-for-3 performance in Atlanta, hitting a home run and scoring twice on Saturday.

This is the first time Guillen has received the AL Player of the Week honors. Tourneau, the world's largest watch store, will supply Guillen with a luxury Swiss Tourneau timepiece, suitably engraved, in recognition of his achievement.

The Angels' Chone Figgins (.577 average, 2 triples, 4 stolen bases) and Baltimore's Brian Roberts (.538, 2 triples, 2 homers) received consideration, while Boston's Josh Beckett (2-0, 1.29 ERA) and Minnesota's Johan Santana (2-0, 0.60 ERA) were among the pitchers nominated.
