BALTIMORE -- The 2011 First-Year Player Draft provided the Orioles organization with what they hope is a glimpse of the future.

Until then, Baltimore has three highly regarded position players each trying to make his case in the Minors to earn a permanent roster spot in the Majors.

Shortstop Manny Machado ranks as Baltimore's top prospect, and for good reason. At Class A Delmarva, Machado has batted .303 with eight RBIs in his past 10 games. On the season, the right-hander is batting .311 with 22 RBIs and five home runs through 28 games.

The 18-year-old was the top high school school player in last year's First-Year Player Draft, being selected third overall. He has been limited by a patella subluxation in his left knee. Had he been healthy, he could be further along in the Orioles' system by now.

But Machado isn't the only one making noise in the Minors.

After hitting .316 with 34 RBIs in Delmarva at the beginning of the season, third baseman Jonathan Schoop was moved up to Class A Frederick, where he has has continued to excel.

In only three games, Schoop has compiled a .333 batting average with three runs and two RBIs. The Curacao native was signed in 2008 and is expected to make his debut in '14.

A prospect who has already had a taste of the Majors this season is second baseman Ryan Adams. Initially called up when starter Brian Roberts went on the disabled list, Adams has played just six games for Baltimore this season after a strong performance in Triple-A Norfolk.

The O's second-round pick in 2006, Adams was hitting .303 in Norfolk before being called up. Since then, the right-handed hitter has managed three hits and two runs in 15 at-bats.

However, manager Buck Showalter has said he would rather have Adams getting at-bats in the Minors than sitting on the bench in Baltimore.
