Veteran relief pitcher Matt Herges was designated for assignment by the Indians following their 15-3 win over the A's on Friday.

Although the club has not yet officially announced the transaction, Herges was seen saying goodbye to his teammates after he received news of the move.

"I got designated [for assignment]," Herges told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I'm not here anymore. I don't really know what my options are at this point. I'm not sure if the Indians would even want me down there [in the Minor Leagues]."

The move opened up a roster spot for fellow right-handed reliever Winston Abreu, who was acquired from the Tampa Rays on Thursday in a trade for pitching prospect John Meloan.

"I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this place," Herges said. "I will never not say quality things about this organization. This is baseball. This is the business of baseball. I get it."

Herges, 39, went 2-1 with a 3.55 ERA in 21 appearances with the Indians after beginning the season at Triple-A. A true baseball nomad, he's played for eight teams in 11 big league seasons, compiling a 42-35 record and 3.92 ERA in 558 career appearances.
