Major League Baseball announced today that longtime baseball executive Wendy Lewis is leaving her position as Senior Vice President, Diversity & Strategic Alliances in order to become Chief Global Diversity Officer for McDonald's, the world's largest restaurant company.
Lewis began her career in baseball as a human resources official with the Chicago Cubs in 1987. She joined MLB's Central Office in 1995 and served as Vice President, Human Resources & Office Operations before being promoted to oversee broader areas. In her most recent capacity, Lewis has been responsible for implementing diversity and inclusion strategies for the 30 Clubs, MLB's Central Office, MLB Advanced Media and MLB Network. Lewis, whose work has been recognized by numerous organizations, has served on the Commissioner's Ownership Diversity and Inclusion Committee; the On-Field Diversity Task Force; and the Front Office & Field Staff Diversity Pipeline Advisory Council. She has developed and implemented innovative initiatives throughout the game that have since been replicated in professional sports.
MLB's Diversity Economic Impact Engagement model, designed by Lewis, has advanced the sport's workforce and league-wide levels of supply chain engagement. One component, MLB's Diverse Business Partners (DBP) Program, has emerged as the premier supplier diversity program in sports. The DBP program was established to cultivate new and existing partnerships with diverse entrepreneurs and business leaders. Since its formation, more than $1 billion has been spent by baseball entities with thousands of businesses. Lewis also organized MLB's annual Diversity Business Summit, which has served as a conference and trade fair for job-seekers, business owners, emerging entrepreneurs and community leaders.
