Pujols, Klein, Tobias Earn Organizational Honors for the Month of August

Lakewood outfielder Jose Pujols, Lehigh Valley right-hander Phil Klein and Clearwater second baseman Josh Tobias have been selected as the Phillies Minor League Hitter, Pitcher and Defender of the Month, respectively, for August.

The 20-year-old Pujols batted .291 (32-110) with eight doubles, five home runs, 14 RBI, 11 walks and a .500 slugging percentage in 29 games. He hit his 23rd home run of the season on August 20, which set a BlueClaws single-season record. During the 2016 season, the Dominican Republic native led the South Atlantic League in home runs (24), was third in RBI (82), fourth in total bases (219) and fifth in extra-base hits (48). Pujols was signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent on July 2, 2012.

Klein, 27, went 4-0 with a 1.06 ERA (4 ER, 34.0 IP), 0.65 WHIP (4 BB, 18 H), 46 strikeouts and a .154 opponents' batting average in five starts. He allowed one run or none in four of his starts and surrendered five or fewer hits in all five. Klein set a career high with 10 strikeouts on August 9, only to break it one start later by striking out 11 batters. He struck out nine batters or more in four of his five starts, and his 46 strikeouts in August were tied for fourth-most in all of Minor League Baseball. Klein was selected off waivers by the Phillies from Texas on June 19.

Tobias played in 26 games for Clearwater in August, and made just two errors during the month. The 23-year-old second baseman made only three errors in a span of 71 games between June 11 in Lakewood and the end of Clearwater's season. He finished the season with a .976 fielding percentage (3 E, 126 TC) in 34 games for the Threshers. Tobias was selected by the Phillies in the 10th round of the June 2015 draft.
