Sundberg to announce first pick

|
ARLINGTON -- Former players Jim Sundberg and Steve Buechele and longtime scout and executive Mel Didier will have the honor of representing the Rangers at the upcoming First-Year Player Draft.

The 2007 First-Year Player Draft takes place June 7-8 at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fla., and the first round will be aired on ESPN2 beginning at 2 p.m. ET, June 7.

All 30 teams are sending prominent former players or longtime club executives to represent them, and Sundberg, Buechele and Didier will be there for the Rangers. They'll be busy as the Rangers have five of the first 54 picks of the draft.

Sundberg, a former All-Star and six-time Gold Glove catcher, is expected to announce the Rangers' first pick, which is the 17th overall.

"I think it will be fun," Sundberg said. "If I had to pick that guy, there would be a lot of pressure. But there's no pressure just running the name out there. We should have a lot of fun."

Sundberg, a member of the Rangers Hall of Fame, is in his third season working in the front office as executive director to the prgesident, while Buechele remains active in the Rangers Alumni program. Both are former Rangers draft picks. Sundberg was taken in the first round of the secondary phase in 1973, and Buchele was a fifth-round pick in 1982.

MLB.com will have every pick of the 50-round Draft, start to finish.
