Indians claim Michael Martinez off outright waivers from the Boston Red Sox

The Indians today claimed UTL MICHAEL MARTINEZ (#1) off outright waivers from the Boston Red Sox.

Martinez, 33, returns to the Indians organization after spending much of the first half in Cleveland, hitting .283 (17-60) with 3 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI and 10 runs scored in 32 games while logging time at five different positions. He was designated for assignment by Cleveland on July 2 and traded to the Red Sox on July 8. He appeared in 4 games for the Red Sox (1-for-6, RS) and was designated for assignment on August 2 following the trading deadline. He will meet the Major League club in New York tomorrow with a corresponding 25-man roster move to follow.

To allow room on the 40-man roster for Martinez, LHP TYLER OLSON has been designated for assignment.
