News & notes about the A's upcoming homestand

The A's will open a 10-game homestand on Friday, Aug. 5 when they play host to the Chicago Cubs. The homestand covers two weekends and features visits from the Cubs, Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners.

The first giveaway of the homestand is during the 1980's Turn-Back-The-Clock Day on Saturday, Aug. 6, when 15,000 fans will receive a BillyBall Retro T-shirt, presented by Cache Creek Casino Resort. The team will also host Fan Appreciation Weekend, Aug. 12 - 14 and STAR WARS™ Fireworks, presented by Chevron on Saturday, Aug. 13.

  • Turn-Back-The-Clock Day/BillyBall T-shirt: Celebrate Turn-Back-The-Clock Day on Saturday, Aug. 6 when the team plays homage to the 1981 BillyBally team that advanced to the ALCS. Community Relations

  • A's Community Fund Bowling Bash: The A's will host the Fourth Annual A's Bowling Bash on Saturday, Aug. 6. The event brings together A's coaches, players, and the community for a night benefiting the A's Community Fund. This is a private event and not open to the public.
  • Breast Cancer Awareness Day Fundraising Table: At each game throughout this homestand, fans will have the opportunity to purchase Breast Cancer Awareness Day pins, caps and necklaces with proceeds benefiting breast cancer education, research and awareness. Also, once again, the A's will be raffling off a custom-made autographed quilt; raffle tickets for the quilt are $5 each. The fundraising table will be set up behind section 120.
  • 50/50 Raffle: The Oakland A's Community Fund hosts a 50/50 Raffle at select games throughout the season. One fan will win half of the gross proceeds raised at each game, with the remaining proceeds benefiting the Community Fund. Ticket sales run from when stadium gates open through the bottom of the sixth inning. Fans can purchase tickets at the kiosk located at section 217 or from a roaming ticket seller. The winner will be announced in the eighth inning.
  • School of Imagination visit: Stephen Vogt will visit with students at Dublin's School of Imagination on Tuesday, Aug. 9 from 10:30 a.m. - noon. Vogt makes regular visits to the school throughout the season. The program is supported by Azusa Pacific University, Vogt's alma mater.
  • Fitness Sluggers, sponsored by Sutter Health, Cooking Demonstration: Mark Canha will join children from the East Bay Asian Youth Center for a Fitness Sluggers Cooking Demonstration at Itani Ramen in Oakland on Tuesday, Aug. 9 from 11 a.m. - noon. The demonstration will include an overview on healthy eating, food preparation, and a cooking lesson. The event is part of the A's Fitness Sluggers program, sponsored by Sutter Health.
  • PLAY Program Clinic: The PLAY program-which stands for Promoting a Lifetime of Activity for Youth-is a public awareness campaign developed by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) in 2004 to combat child obesity. In conjunction with the A's athletic training staff, PLAY will host a clinic for local youth on Wednesday, Aug. 10 from 10 a.m. - noon on the field.
  • Jedi Warriors: Jed Lowrie will host a meet and greet for families from the Wounded Warriors Project through his "Jedi Warriors" program before the Wednesday, Aug. 10 game.
  • Heart and Hustle Award: Marcus Semien will be recognized as the A's recipient of the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPAA) Heart and Hustle Award winner. The award honors active players who demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit and traditions of the game. The Heart and Hustle Award is also the only award in Major League Baseball that is voted on by former players. A's Manager Bob Melvin, along with former player and A's broadcaster Ray Fosse, will present Semien with the award before the Wednesday, Aug. 10 game.
  • Chevrolet Youth Baseball Coaches Clinic: Each season, the A's coaches host hundreds of aspiring youth baseball players in a series of Chevrolet Youth Baseball Coaches Clinics. The second clinic of the season is set for Saturday, Aug. 13. Children participate in pitching, throwing, fielding, catching, base running, and hitting workshops to fine-tune their skills. Following the clinic, participants get A's ticket vouchers and coaches' autographs, courtesy of Chevrolet and the Bay Area Chevrolet dealer group.
  • Chevron STEM Zone: The A's will host the Chevron STEM Zone at the game on Saturday, Aug. 13. Chevron created the STEM Zone to help deepen kids' interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics outside the classroom by showing its applications in the real world. The fun and hands-on baseball-related learning exhibits will be located behind Sections 201 and 217 throughout the game.
  • Food Bank Wednesdays, presented by Lagunitas: On Wednesday, Aug. 10 (and select Wednesdays throughout the season), volunteers will be on-site to help collect cans of food and monetary donations before the game to benefit the Alameda County Food Bank. With every five cans donated or $5 contribution, fans will receive a buy one get one free ticket voucher for a future game.
  • A's Amigos: The A's Amigos program gives bilingual Spanish-speaking children from non-profit organizations the opportunity to interact with bilingual A's players. Participants are able to learn about the value of sportsmanship and hard work from their role models. In addition to the pregame chat, each child receives a game ticket and an A's cap. A's Amigos is sponsored by Kelly-Moore Paints.
  • Little A's: During select games throughout the season, youth and their chaperones from nonprofit organizations will have the opportunity to attend the A's game free of charge. In addition to a game ticket, each child receives a pair of A's themed socks and child-admission pass to the Oakland Zoo. The Little A's program is presented by Bank of America and supported by the Oakland Zoo, the Clorox Foundation, and Capitol Corridor.
  • Take the Field with the A's: The Take the Field with the A's program gives youth baseball and softball teams the chance to live out their Major League dreams. As part of this program, youth players from a local baseball or softball team join Oakland A's players on the field during the National Anthem.
  • A's Community Fund Silent Auction: Every Saturday and Sunday home game (and other select games), the A's Community Fund hosts a silent auction featuring signed and unsigned A's memorabilia as well as game-used items. The silent auctions are located in the A's fan center behind section 120 and end with the last out in the bottom of the fifth inning.
