Blue Jays acquire Melvin Upton Jr.

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. and cash considerations from the San Diego Padres in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Hansel Rodriguez.

Upton, 31, has appeared in 92 games this season for the Padres posting a .256 batting average with 11 doubles, two triples, 16 home runs and 45 RBI. The 6-3, 185 lb. outfielder has posted a .439 slugging percentage and has stolen 20 bases this season. Over his 12 seasons in the Major Leagues, the 2nd overall pick in the 2002 First Year Player Draft has posted a .245 average with 258 doubles, 160 home runs, 570 RBI and 293 stolen bases.

To make room on the roster for Upton, the Blue Jays will make a corresponding move prior to tonight's game.
