Ken Griffey Jr. Weekend set for August 5-7 at Safeco Field

Number retirement ceremony Saturday highlights a weekend of special events

The Seattle Mariners will celebrate Ken Griffey Jr.'s induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame with a weekend of special events at Safeco Field August 5-6-7 against the Los Angeles Angels. The highlight will be the pregame ceremony on Saturday night when the number 24 becomes the first number of a Mariners player to be retired by the franchise.
A commemorative number retirement logo will be stamped on the baseballs used during all three games and will appear on a patch on the jerseys and caps worn by Mariners players on Friday and Saturday.

Friday, August 5 (game time 7:10 pm)

  • The first 20,000 fans through the gates will receive a Ken Griffey Jr. Hall of Fame Bobblehead, courtesy of ROOT SPORTS.
  • Mariners players will wear caps and uniforms from 1989, Ken's rookie season. The commemorative patch will feature the royal blue and gold colors from that era.

Saturday, August 6 (pregame ceremony at 5:30 pm)

  • The official number retirement pregame ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m.
  • The first 20,000 fans through the gates will receive a replica of Junior's Hall of Fame plaque.
  • Mariners players will wear 24 on their batting practice jerseys pregame, the last time that any player in the Mariners organization, Minor or Major League, will wear the number.
  • Caps, batting practice tops and game jerseys will feature the special patch rendered in navy and Northwest green.

Representatives of the National Baseball Hall of Fame are scheduled to bring Griffey's actual bronze plaque from the Hall of Fame's gallery in Cooperstown, New York, to Seattle. It will be at Safeco Field for Saturday's pregame ceremony. While the plaque is in Seattle, it will be temporarily replaced in the Hall of Fame's Plaque Gallery with a photo. The actual plaque is scheduled to be reinstalled on August 8.

Sunday, August 7 (game time 1:10 pm)

  • The first 20,000 fans through the gates will receive a replica of Griffey's rookie season jersey from 1989, courtesy of NIKE. It is the same style Mariners players will wear during Friday's game.

A Hall of a Player
Griffey's selection for the National Baseball Hall of Fame was announced on January 6. Of 440 ballots submitted, Griffey was named on 437, which accounted for 99.32% of the vote, the highest percentage in the history of the election dating back to 1936. He was the 51st player to be elected in his first year of eligibility and the first inducted as a Seattle Mariner.
Catcher Mike Piazza, the other member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2016, will join Griffey at Cooperstown for the official induction ceremony on Sunday, July 24. The ceremony will be televised by the MLB Network.
