Right-hander Simmons paces Double-A shutout

Right-handed starter Seth Simmons and three relievers combined on a six-hit shutout for Double-A San Antonio on Saturday night, while left-hander Will Headean threw five no-hit innings in his start for short-season Class A Tri-City.

Simmons (1-2, 2.72 ERA) allowed two hits and three walks with five strikeouts over six innings in the Missions' 1-0 win over Midland in San Antonio.

Left-hander Jose Torres (1.02 ERA) allowed a hit with a strikeout in the seventh, while right-hander Yimmi Brasoban (2.50 ERA) allowed two hits in a scoreless eighth. Right-hander Jason Jester (2.38 ERA) had three strikeouts around a hit and a walk in the ninth to complete the shutout and get his 13th save.

First baseman Luis Tejada (.280) was 1-for-3 and scored the only run for San Antonio (10-12 in the second half, 32-60 overall). Catcher Rocky Gale (.200) was 0-for-3 with an RBI groundout.

Headean, 22, the Padres' 13th-round pick in 2015, recorded seven strikeouts and issued a walk in his outing for Tri-City.

There were two moves in the Padres' system on Saturday. Left-handed starter Thomas Dorminy was promoted from low Class A Fort Wayne to high Class A Lake Elsinore. Right-hander Anderson Espinosa, the 18-year-old acquired from Boston in the Drew Pomeranz deal, joined the TinCaps.

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (53-40): Nashville 19, CHIHUAHUAS 5 -- Third baseman Carlos Asuaje (.328) was 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Right fielder Hunter Renfroe (.335) was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while second baseman Diego Goris (.313) was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Righty Daniel McCutchen (8-6, 5.96 ERA) started and allowed nine runs on 10 hits and a walk with a strikeout in four innings. Righty Leonel Campos (4.54 ERA) allowed six runs on four hits and four walks with a strikeout in an inning. Righty Eric Yardley (4.97 ERA) allowed three runs on four hits and three walks with a strikeout in two innings, while righty Adam Cimber (17.36 ERA) allowed a run on two hits with a strikeout in one inning.

HIGH CLASS A LAKE ELSINORE (14-9, 46-47): STORM 7, Inland Empire 4 -- Third baseman Josh VanMeter (.269) was 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while left fielder Edwin Moreno (.243) had two triples in four at-bats with an RBI and two runs scored. Center fielder Michael Gettys (.319) was 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored, while second baseman Luis Urias (.328) was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Shortstop Javier Guerra (.206) had a double in three at-bats with a walk, an RBI and a run scored, and designated hitter Ty France (.318) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Right-hander Enyel De Los Santos (6.30 ERA) started and allowed a run on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts in six innings. Righty Ben Paullus (4.03 ERA) allowed two runs on four hits in one-third of an inning, while right-hander Trey Wingenter (2-0, 3.00 ERA) struck out two in 2 2/3 perfect innings for the win. Righty Phil Maton (0.98 ERA) allowed a run on a hit and two walks with three strikeouts in two innings.

LOW CLASS A FORT WAYNE (9-14, 45-48): Cedar Rapids 13, TIN CAPS 10 (10 innings) -- First baseman Brad Zunica (.256) went 1-for-4, hitting his 12th homer and recordng four RBIs. Third baseman Carlos Belen (.218) went 1-for-4, hitting his fifth homer and scoring two runs, while designated hitter Jose Carlos Urena (.176) also went 1-for-4, hitting his second homer. Center fielder Tyler Moore (.256) had two doubles in four at-bats, with a walk and two runs scored. Righty Austin Smith (4.54 ERA) started and allowed a run on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Right-hander Nick Monroe (6.54 ERA) allowed six runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in an inning, while lefty Nathan Foriest (4.34 ERA) allowed a run on three hits with a strikeout in 1 1/3 innings. Southpaw Elvin Liriano (2.01 ERA) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts in three innings. Righty Louis Distacio (1-2, 5.32 ERA) allowed three runs on four hits with a strikeout in the 10th to suffer the loss.

SHORT SEASON CLASS A TRI-CITY (15-14): Eugene 4, DUST DEVILS 3 -- Center fielder Buddy Reed (.250) was 3-for-4 with a steal and two runs scored, while shortstop Chris Baker (.277) was 2-for-5 with a double. Left fielder Taylor Kohlwey (.214) was 2-for-5 with a double. Righty Evan Miller (1-1, 2.19 ERA) followed Headean and gave up three runs on a hit and two walks in an inning to take the loss. Right-hander Jesse Scholtens (1.17 ERA) allowed a run on two hits with two strikeouts in two innings, while righty Aaron Cressley (1.59 ERA) pitched a perfect inning.

ARIZONA ROOKIE PADRES (10-11): REDS 4, Padres 3 -- Catcher Jose Lezama (.279) was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while first baseman Luis Anguizola (.304) was 2-for-4. Left fielder Jack Suwinski (.250) was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. (.325) was 1-for-4 with a steal and two runs scored. Righty Jean Garcia (2.77 ERA) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with five strikeouts in six innings, while right-hander Starlin Cordero (0-1, 4.91 ERA) allowed two runs (one earned) on three walks in one-third of an inning. Righty Grant Zawadzki (3.27 ERA) allowed a hit with a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning, and right-hander Wilmer Torres (2.16 ERA) allowed two walks with a strikeout in a hitless/scoreless inning.
