Yost has chosen Chicago White Sox left-hander Chris Sale as the AL's starting pitcher. This marks the first career Midsummer Classic start for Sale, a five-time All-Star in his seven-year Major League career. In his 18 starts in 2016, the 6'6" southpaw is 14-3 with a 3.38 ERA (125.0 IP, 104 H, 26 BB, 123 SO). The 27-year-old Florida native's 14 wins are a Major League-high. This year Sale became the third Major League pitcher since 1913 to win his first nine starts of the season with an ERA of 1.58 or lower (others: fellow White Sox hurler Eddie Cicotte, in 1919, and Sal Maglie of the 1952 New York Giants). He joined Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez as the only hurlers to fan 10 or more batters in eight consecutive starts and Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax as the only pitchers since 1900 to record three straight starts with 12 or more strikeouts while also allowing one run or less. Sale set a White Sox franchise record with an AL-high 274 strikeouts in 2015. He has finished in the top six of AL Cy Young Award balloting in each of the previous four seasons, including a third-place finish in 2014, when he posted a 2.17 ERA and a 12-4 record in 26 starts. Sale will join Mark Buehrle (2005), Esteban Loaiza (2003), Early Wynn (1959) and Billy Pierce (1953, 55-56) as White Sox pitchers to start for the AL.
