The left-handed Hawpe is hitting .315 with 13 RBIs and a team-high five home runs this spring. He was replaced in Tuesday's lineup by Jeff Baker, projected to fill a utility role at the corner outfield and infield positions.
With less than a week remaining before Opening Day, Hawpe's injury could affect the one roster spot remaining to be filled. Left-handed hitters John Mabry (.400, two homers, five RBIs) and Alexis Gomez (.333, four RBIs) are competing with right-handed hitter Ryan Spilborghs (.429, two homers, 10 RBIs) for a reserve spot. While Gomez and Spilborghs are primarily outfielders, Mabry has split time fairly evenly between outfield and first base and also has logged games at third.
With veteran center fielder Steve Finley expected to fill the role of fourth outfielder, a potential disabled list appearance for Hawpe would mean more time immediately for Baker and Finley and an additional spot for Mabry, Gomez, and Spilborghs to compete for.
