PADRES 5, BREWERS 2
at Maryvale Baseball Park, Phoenix
Saturday, March 24
Padres at the plate:
Minor League infielder Tim Brown snapped a 2-2 tie with a three-run home run in the eighth inning that glanced off the right-field foul pole. The Padres had only four hits in the game, but four of the five runners who scored reached base on a walk or a fielder's choice that followed a walk.
Brewers at the plate:
J.J. Hardy hit his second spring home run in the first inning, a solo shot, and Craig Counsell hit a go-ahead RBI double in the fourth. Counsell finished 3-for-3 for the Brewers, who out-hit the Padres, 11-4.
Padres on the mound:
Trevor Hoffman took the win after working a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout. Starter Jake Peavy lasted 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts.
Brewers on the mound:
Brown's homer tagged Brewers reliever Derrick Turnbow with his first three runs of the spring. Turnbow walked a pair of batters in the inning and was charged with the loss. Starter Chris Capuano was sharp through five scoreless innings but faltered in the sixth, walking the first three batters he faced before Josh Bard's two-run single.
Cactus League records:
Padres 12-11, Brewers 9-15.
The Padres' squad was split Saturday, but will be together vs. San Francisco on Sunday. Jack Cassel (0-1, 9.00 ERA) will get the start for San Diego. Game time is scheduled 1:05 p.m. PT. The Brewers travel to Surprise, Ariz. for the second time in three days, but this time will face the Royals. Jeff Suppan will start for Milwaukee against Zack Greinke in another matchup of right-handers.
