Royals at the plate: Esteban German sparked the Royals with two walks, a steal, a run, and an RBI double. Mark Teahan was 2-for-5.

Mariners at the plate: Jose Guillen had a pair of doubles in his first two at-bats before lining out to third with the bases loaded in the fifth. Jose Lopez was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Jose Vidro was three-for-five with an eighth-inning RBI.

Royals on the mound: Odalis Perez had a strong outing, yielding one run on six hits and three walks in five innings. He had runners in scoring position in four of his five frames but was only damaged by a leadoff double to Guillen, who advanced on a grounder and scored on a sacrifice fly. Ryan Braun had a scoreless inning of relief.

Mariners on the mound: Jarrod Washburn had another quality start, holding the Royals to three runs on six hits and three walks over six innings. He faltered in the sixth, walking back-to-back batters with two outs to load the bases before inducing a fly ball to center to escape the inning. George Sherrill and Eric O'Flaherty both pitched scoreless innings.

Cactus League records: Royals 9-13 Mariners 11-15.
