PITTSBURGH -- With a little more than a week remaining in the online voting process, the Pirates will need a lot of help to send an All-Star Game starter to San Diego.
Four Pirates were represented on the latest All-Star balloting update, released Wednesday, but none gained any significant traction toward a starting bid in the annual Midsummer Classic, which will be played July 12 at Petco Park. All three outfielders rank among the National League's top 15 vote-getters, and Josh Harrison is holding his ground at second base.
Harrison remains well behind the leaders in the second-base voting, but he's within striking distance of the fourth-leading vote-getter, former Pirate Neil Walker. John Jaso, who had ranked fifth at first base, did not appear on the latest balloting update.
Marte has the strongest All-Star argument of any Pirates player, ranking fourth among NL outfielders with 2.9 WAR, according to Fangraphs.com. The Bucs' left fielder has stayed hot amid a team-wide cold stretch, entering play Wednesday with a team-high .331 average that ranks third in the league and a team-best 20 stolen bases.
Marte is hitting .331/.373/.498 with six homers and 27 RBIs. The Gold Glove Award winner also shares the NL lead with eight outfield assists.
Polanco is not far behind, ranking sixth among NL outfielders with 2.6 WAR. His numbers have dipped in recent weeks, but he's still batting .295/.379/.510 with nine homers, 39 RBIs and nine steals.
