Loe scratched with neck, back spasms

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Rangers scratched pitcher Kameron Loe from Thursday's start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim because of spasms in his neck and back.

Mike Wood is scheduled to start for the Rangers instead. Loe first felt the pain while stretching during a workout Wednesday at the Rangers' complex.

Loe is competing with Jamey Wright and Bruce Chen for the fifth spot in the rotation and this will set back his chances if he is sidelined for an extended period of time.

"I'm hoping he's all right," pitching coach Mark Connor said. "It's a lot better today than yesterday morning but we didn't want to take any chances."

Loe may pitch Saturday instead. Brandon McCarthy is scheduled to pitch that day but could be shifted to a Minor League game. A longer delay could leave Wright in the lead for the fifth spot in the rotation with Chen still very much in the running.
