"He hasn't been out that long," Melvin said. "We talked about a fairly quick assignment off the DL. If he pitches on Friday, it could be as early as five days after that."
Manaea threw a 39-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday and said he felt "great." He also completed a light bullpen session on Sunday. The rookie exited his start against the Rangers with a pronator strain and was put on the DL the next day, but an MRI exam revealed no damage to the ligament in the elbow.
Manaea is 2-4 with a 6.02 ERA in nine starts this season. A healthy return would aid a struggling Oakland rotation, which currently does not have a starter listed for Friday against the Angels and entered Tuesday with the second highest ERA (5.18) in the Majors.
• Josh Reddick, recovering from a fractured thumb, played in his first rehab game with Triple-A Nashville on Monday, going 0-for-4. The outfielder is expected to play in four more games with the Sounds, before rejoining the A's in San Francisco on Monday.
