A's rally in ninth to top Angels

ATHLETICS (ss) 6, ANGELS (ss) 5
at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, Phoenix
Sunday, March 18

Angels at the plate: Mike Napoli's solo home run to deep right-center field in the fifth inning was the Halos' first hit of the game, and Robb Quinlan immediately followed with another opposite-field homer. Later in the frame, an error on an infield single by Matt Brown gave the Angels a 3-2 lead. Brown's third homer of the spring, a two-run shot to left-center in the seventh, put them up 5-3. Napoli and Quinlan also had two hits.

A's at the plate: Borrowed from Oakland's Minor League camp for the day, Danny Putnam hit a two-run double with two outs in the second to open the scoring. Putnam singled in the fifth to move Travis Buck from first base to third, and Buck scored on a groundout by Jason Kendall. Buck drew two walks, singled and scored twice.

Angels on the mound: Righty starter Nick Adenhart was touched for two runs in the second inning and had command issues at times, but he never seemed to be in deep trouble. He allowed three hits and three walks while striking out two over four innings.

A's on the mound: Righty starter Dan Haren, named Oakland's Opening Day starter earlier in the day, faced the minimum 12 batters through the first four innings but gave up three runs (two earned) on two homers, a hit batter, an infield single and an error by second baseman Mark Ellis in the fifth. The first A's starter to get into the sixth inning this spring, Haren gave up five hits and walked two with one strikeout over 5 2/3 innings.

Cactus League records: Angels 12-8; A's 8-9-1

Up next: A's righty Esteban Loaiza will face righty Jake Peavy of the visiting Padres in a 1:05 p.m. PT start Monday at Phoenix Muni. The Angels have Monday off; on Tuesday, they'll start righty Ervin Santana against righty Chris Young of the host Padres at 7:05 p.m. PT in Peoria.
