A's Select 30 Players on Final Day of 2016 First-Year Player Draft
The Oakland A's selected 30 players on the third and final day of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, the club announced today. The total included 25 college players and the A's drafted college athletes with 35 of their 41 picks overall. The breakdown includes 19 pitchers, five catchers, eight infielders and nine outfielders.
Notable selections from day three include outfielder Robert Bennie in the 24th round from East Stroudsburg. Bennie is the brother of current A's minor leaguer Joe Bennie and hit .397 with 10 home runs and 54 RBI in 56 games for the Warriors this year. Catcher Collin Theroux, the A's 32nd round pick out of Oklahoma State, is from San Mateo and graduated from Serra HS. The A's next pick was also a catcher, Jarrett Costa from Westmont College. Costa graduated from Washington HS in Fremont and hit .333 with five home runs and 49 RBI in 53 games this year for Westmont. With their final pick in the draft, the A's selected shortstop Brett Bittiger from Pace University in the 40th round. Bittiger is the son of A's professional scout Jeff Bittiger.
