To keep Matz on normal rest, the Mets will use right-hander Logan Verrett as a spot starter on Saturday. With New York having an off-day on Monday, deGrom will likely start on Tuesday against the Pirates at Citi Field, giving him a full week between starts.
Matz allowed just two runs on three hits and struck out eight against the Brewers on May 20. He lasted just five innings on Tuesday in a 3-1 loss to the Pirates.
• Outfielder Juan Lagares tested his injured left thumb prior to Thursday's series opener in Milwaukee, and he could be available at some point this weekend.
"He swung this afternoon and actually looked pretty good," Collins said. "He's going to take batting practice, and then he will try to take some balls in the outfield to see if he can close the glove.
"If he can catch the ball in batting practice, then why not use him?"
Lagares has not played since partially tearing a ligament in the thumb making a diving catch on Saturday. Yoenis Cespedes started in center field on Thursday for the fourth straight game, with Michael Conforto in left field and Curtis Granderson in right.
