Mariners at the plate: Second baseman Rey Ordonez went 2-for-3 during a singles-only offensive attack. Ichiro Suzuki went 1-for-3, reaching on a leadoff single in the first inning, designated hitter Jose Guillen singled in the fifth inning, Ben Broussard in the eighth and Michael Garciaparra in the ninth.

Padres at the plate: Left fielder Terrmel Sledge hit a home run in the first inning -- the only extra-base hit of the game, and singled in the third. Designated hitter Russell Branyan and second baseman Craig Stansberry also singled.

Mariners on the mound: Starter Jarrod Washburn pitched two innings, allowing two hits and one run -- a home run with one out in the first inning. The left-hander struck out three and walked none. Minor League left-hander Justin Thomas tossed two perfect innings of relief, striking out three of the six batters he faced.

Padres on the mound: Starter Clay Hensley surrendered a leadoff single to Ichiro and then retired the next six batters before calling it a day. Five of the outs were recorded by infielders. Right-handed reliever Scott Linebrink worked a perfect sixth inning.

Cactus League records: Mariners 0-2; Padres 2-0.

Up next: The Mariners have a split-squad doubleheader on tap for Sunday. One team travels to Scottsdale to play the Giants. Right-hander Jeff Weaver makes his Mariners debut. The second Mariners team treks to Tucson to play the Diamondbacks, and right-hander Cha Seung Baek is scheduled to start. The Padres play the Athletics at Peoria Stadium with right-hander Greg Maddux making his San Diego debut.
