When the 2008 All-Star Game was held in Yankee Stadium, New York was adorned with baseball-themed Statues of Liberty. For last Midsummer's Classic, in Angel Stadium, Mickey Mouse popped up all over Orange County sporting baseball regalia. So what will help celebrate the 2011 All-Star Game, being held in Phoenix's Chase Field? What else? Cactus statues will be decked out in various baseball-themed modes, Major League Baseball announced on Monday.
The project is a result of MLB's partnership with licensee Forever Collectibles to design a series of MLB-themed cacti. Plans call for 10 statues in four designs to be placed at key spots around the greater Phoenix area. Each cactus will be seven-and-a-half feet tall and weigh in excess of 700 pounds. The MLB.com Shop will soon begin offering miniature versions of the cacti for collectors, and in the meantime it is stocked with 58 items ranging from Authentic All-Star BP Jerseys to a Nike All-Star Logo T-shirt. The statues will be colorfully adorned with a mash of bold graphics celebrating the 2011 All-Star Game, the D-backs and the other 29 Major League teams. One statue will be designed to commemorate significant milestones in the history of the Arizona franchise. The statues will take their places in late May and remain on display until after the July 12 game. Specific locations and further details will be announced at a later date.
