The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Tom Wilhelmsen from Triple-A Round Rock. To make room for Wilhelmsen, the team has optioned infielder Hanser Alberto to Round Rock. Additionally, second baseman Rougned Odor has been reinstated from Major League Baseball's Suspended List and is active for tonight's game against Seattle.
Odor will be seeking his first action with Texas since May 25 vs. Los Angeles-AL. He played in 46 of the Rangers' first 47 games before serving his 7-game suspension, including 44 starts at second base. He has a .262 average with 7 home runs and 25 RBI this season, ranking tied for fourth on the club in both home runs and RBI.
Wilhelmsen appeared in 5 games with Round Rock, going 0-1 with a 1.13 ERA (1 ER/8.0 IP) and holding opponents to a .172 (5-29) average with one walk and 5 strikeouts. His last outing was on Thursday at Nashville (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 16 pitches/11 strikes). He will be in his second stint with the Rangers after allowing 17 runs in 15.1 innings over 17 appearances with the club from Opening Day to May 15. His last major league outing was May 15 vs. Toronto, as he was optioned to Triple-A the next day.
Alberto was on the Opening Day roster for the first time this year and has batted .162 (6-37) with no home runs and 3 RBI in 24 games/10 starts. He has been on the club's active roster, including for last year's American League Division Series, since he was promoted for a second time last year on August 19.
The Rangers' major league roster remains at the 40-man limit.
TEPESCH RELEASED: Right-handed pitcher Nick Tepesch, who had spent the entire season on the Triple-A Round Rock roster, has requested and been granted his unconditional release. Tepesch went 9-17 with a 4.56 ERA over 42 games/39 starts for the Rangers in his only career major league action in 2013-14, and had a 4-2 record with a 4.11 ERA (30 ER/65.2 IP) in 11 games/starts for Round Rock this season. He was not tendered a 2016 major league contract by Texas last December before re-signing with the organization as a minor league free agent in January. The club's 14th round selection in the 2010 June draft, he has spent his entire professional career in the Texas organization.
