Mariners select Edwin Diaz from AA Jackson

Cody Martin optioned to AAA Tacoma

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipotoannounced today that the club has selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Edwin Diaz from AA Jackson. To make room on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Cody Martin was optioned to AAA Tacoma.

Diaz will be in uniform (#39) and available for tonight's game against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park.

The Mariners Major League, 40-man, roster is now full at 40 players.

Diaz, 22, was 3-3 with 1 save and a 2.21 ERA (10 ER, 40.2 IP) with 54 strikeouts in 16 games including 6 starts with AA Jackson this season. Since being moved to the bullpen on May 10, he was 1-0 with 1 save and a spotless 0.00 ERA, tossing 11.2 innings and allowing just 3 hits, 0 earned runs while striking out 16 and walking only 2. He began the season in the starting rotation, going 2-3 with a 3.00 ERA (10 ER, 30.0 IP) with 38 strikeouts in 6 starts.

Diaz split the 2015 season between A Bakersfield and AA Jackson, going 7-10 with a 3.82 ERA. He was a member of the World Team in the 2015 MLB Futures Game and was named by the Mariners as the organizations Starting Pitcher of the Year for the second straight season.

Diaz was the Mariners 3rd round (98th overall) selection in the 2012 June Draft. He graduated from Caguas (PR) Military Academy that same month. Overall, he was 23-24, 3.14 (135 ER, 386.1 IP) with 1 complete game, 1 shutout and 1 save in 89 games, 71 starts, in his minor league career in the Mariners system.

Martin, 26, was recalled from Tacoma on June 2, and was the winning pitcher that night at San Diego (1.0 IP, 1 H). He worked 3.0 innings in last night's game (1 ER) at Texas. Martin was 5-3 with a 5.67 ERA (29 ER, 46.0 IP) with 45 strikeouts in 12 games including 8 starts with AAA Tacoma this season.
