Reading outfielder Dylan Cozens, Lehigh Valley right-hander Edubray Ramos and Clearwater outfielder Carlos Tocci have been selected as the Phillies Minor League Hitter, Pitcher and Defender of the Month, respectively, for May.
Cozens, 22, batted .289 (33-114) with 23 runs scored, 10 doubles, nine home runs, 26 RBI, 13 walks, five stolen bases and a .614 slugging percentage in 30 games. Cozens hit safely in 25 of his 30 games, including an 11-game hit streak from May 7-18, during which he batted .349 (14-43). He hit five home runs in the first six games of that streak. The 6-foot-6, 235-pounder leads the Eastern League in home runs (14), doubles (18), extra-base hits (32), slugging percentage (.582), total bases (117) and home runs per at-bat ratio (1 HR every 14.36 AB), and is second in RBI (44) and hits (57). Cozens was selected by the Phillies in the second round of the June 2012 draft.
The 23-year-old Ramos pitched in 12 games between double-A Reading and triple-A Lehigh Valley, combining to go 1-0 with two saves, a 0.52 ERA (1 ER, 17.1 IP), 0.69 WHIP (1 BB, 11 H) and 16 strikeouts while holding batters to a .175 batting average (11-63). He has not allowed a run in his last 15.1 innings pitched (2.0 IP with REA followed by 13.1 with LHV). The Venezuela native holds a 1.27 ERA (4 ER, 28.1 IP), 0.71 WHIP (2 BB, 18 H) and 14.50 strikeout to walk ratio (29 SO) overall this season, all of which rank first among Phillies minor leaguers with at least 25.0 innings pitched. Ramos was signed by the Phillies as a minor league free agent on November 21, 2012.
Tocci, a 20-year-old outfielder, made just one error-his only of the season-in 26 games in May. He has a .992 fielding percentage (118 total chances) and has recorded two outfield assists in 426.1 innings over 49 games this season. Tocci was signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent on August 23, 2011.
