"It is pretty cool," Gonzalez said prior to the Dodgers' game at Wrigley Field on Wednesday night. "The All-Star Game's always fun. It's always a great experience. This year, being in San Diego, it would mean a little bit extra for me, being my hometown. Those four days [off] are always nice, though, so either way, you win."
Among Dodgers position players, shortstop Corey Seager and second baseman Chase Utley are pushing for selections, though neither is among the leading vote-getters at his respective position.
Seager's nine homers and 27 RBIs rank second and fourth, respectively, in the NL among shortstops, and Utley's 31 runs scored place him second in the league among second basemen.
Gonzalez said it can tough for a rookie like Seager to win a fan vote, simply because he hasn't been in the Major Leagues very long.
"Performance isn't always the key factor in the vote," he said. "So hopefully he'll get a player vote or something along those lines. That's what you hope for, and I think, for the most part, that's how people get in for the first time -- by a player vote or a coach's decision."
