Jays sign McDonald to one-year deal

The Blue Jays signed infielder John McDonald to a one-year contract worth $750,000 on Wednesday. McDonald will serve as Toronto's primary backup at second base and shortstop.

The 32-year-old McDonald began the 2006 season as a reserve infielder, but took over as Toronto's starting shortstop after defensive woes cost Russ Adams his everyday job. McDonald will share time at short this season with Royce Clayton, who signed a one-year deal with the Jays in November.

On Tuesday, Toronto also signed infielder Jason Smith to a one-year deal worth $500,000. The Jays selected Smith from the Cubs during the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 7. Like McDonald, Smith, who can play all four infield positions, has the chance to serve as a utility player for Toronto. Adams -- now a second baseman -- is scheduled to begin next season at Triple-A.

McDonald is entering his third season with the Blue Jays. The eight-year veteran has also had stints with the Indians and Tigers. Last season he set career bests in home runs (three), RBIs (23) and games played (104).
