Marlins prospect Wittgren optioned to New Orleans

The Marlins optioned right-hander Nick Wittgren to Triple-A New Orleans on Wednesday and recalled left-hander Justin Nicolino.

Wittgren, the club's No. 21 prospect per MLBPipeline.com, appeared in two games, allowing one earned run in two innings.

Nicolino, 24, was 2-2 with a 3.60 ERA in four starts for New Orleans this season. He went 5-4 with a 4.01 ERA in 12 starts for Miami in 2015. Nicolino is slated to start Wednesday against the Dodgers, filling the Marlins' rotation spot that opened when Jarred Cosart was optioned to New Orleans on Tuesday.
