White Sox place Alex Avila on the disabled list; recall Kevan Smith from class AAA Charlotte

Prior to today's game vs. Texas, the Chicago White Sox placed catcher Alex Avila on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring and recalled catcher Kevan Smith from Class AAA Charlotte.
 
Smith, 26, is hitting .345 (10-29) with one double, two home runs, six RBI and a .980 OPS over eight games with Charlotte this season. He has thrown out 45.5 percent (5-11) of attempted basestealers. Smith has no major-league experience and will wear uniform No. 61.
 
Smith, 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, is a career .290 hitter (505-1,741) with 113 doubles, 49 home runs, 294 RBI and an .821 OPS in 476 games over six seasons (2011-16) in the White Sox system. He has thrown out 31.1 percent (131-421) of attempted basestealers in his career. He originally was selected by Chicago in the seventh round of the June 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Pittsburgh, where he also quarterbacked the Panthers football team.
 
Avila, 29, left yesterday's game following the bottom of the sixth inning. He is hitting .214 (6-28) over 10 games this season, his first with the White Sox.
