Padres celebrate 5th anniversary of Comunidad Awards with first award winner

Humberto Gurmilan to be honored as first of four Comunidad Award winners for his work in the area of youth health

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres will honor the recipient of the first Hispanic Heritage Comunidad Award for 2016 in a pregame ceremony prior to tomorrow night's game vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates. Humberto Gurmilan, journalist and founder of The Gurmilan Foundation, has been selected as the recipient of the award by members of the Padres' Hispanic Community Advisory Council (HCAC). Continuing in 2016, each winner will also receive $1,000 from the Padres Foundation to be donated to the charity of their choice.

Gurmilan was selected to receive the award in the area of LIVE (youth health) for his continuous work in supporting people with disabilities throughout the border region of San Diego and Tijuana. After sustaining a spinal cord injury at the age of 15 during a surfing trip in Baja, Gurmilan was left paralyzed from the chest down and began a challenging physical rehabilitation program. Soon after leaving the hospital, he realized the opportunity he had to empower and motivate others facing similar circumstances through speaking to groups about overcoming adversity and advocating disability awareness. Humberto is working on establishing The Gurmilan Foundation to focus on supporting young individuals with disabilities. The foundation will raise funds in hopes of providing individuals with disabilities the ability to live a more inclusive life.

The Padres' Hispanic Heritage Comunidad Award series celebrates its 5th year anniversary in 2016. Established in 2012, the Comunidad Award looks to recognize and pay tribute to individuals or organizations whose work makes a positive impact on those who live and work in San Diego's Hispanic community. In support of the Padres Foundation's community vision, four awards will be given throughout the year, one each in the areas of children's health (LIVE), children's education (LEARN), youth baseball/ softball or youth fitness (PLAY) and supporting our law enforcement and military communities (SERVE).
