Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman and actor/producer Jake Gyllenhaal will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the 11:05 a.m. Red Sox-Blue Jays game on Patriot's Day, Monday, April 18. Gyllenhaal is playing the role of Bauman in the Lionsgate film Stronger.
Inspired by the true story and based on the New York Times bestselling book of the same name, the film chronicles the working-class Boston man, Bauman, whose iconic photo from the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing captured the hearts of the world. Stronger is the deeply personal account of the heroic journey that came after that photo - defining a man's inner courage, a community's pride, a family's bond and an unexpectedly tenacious love. The film is directed by David Gordon Green with a screenplay by Boston local, John Pollono.
Fans are asked to be in their seats by 10:30 a.m. to be part of filming that will take place that morning. Yawkey Way Gates (Gates A and D) will open two hours before the game (9:05 a.m.). All other gates will open 1 ½ hours before the game (9:35 a.m.).
In addition to Bauman and Gyllenhaal throwing out the ceremonial first pitch, the American Flag will be draped over the Green Monster for the anthem, which will be performed by a U.S. Marine Corp Band from Quantico, VA. Military members from Hanscom Air Force base will line the warning track along the left field wall and the New England End Zone Militia will present the colors. During the 7th inning stretch, U.S. Navy Musician Laura Carey will perform God Bless America. Patriot's Day at Fenway Park is presented by Poland Spring.
