JACKIE ROBINSON DAY
Friday, April 15 is Jackie Robinson Day, Major League Baseball's annual celebration honoring the contributions and impact of Jackie Robinson not just on the sport of baseball, but on the nation as a whole.
This year marks the 71st anniversary of Robinson signing his professional contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization, which was the first step toward his eventual breaking of the color barrier on April 15, 1947. In honor of the legacy he leaves behind, Robinson's jersey No. 42 was retired throughout the sport of baseball, and all 30 MLB teams celebrate his courage, athleticism and unstoppable spirit with a league-wide day of celebration.
Tonight, Astros and Tigers players and coaches will wear Robinson's No. 42 on their jerseys and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner will throw out a ceremonial first pitch. Young athletes from the Astros Urban Youth Academy will also take the field with Astros players prior to the start of the 7:10 p.m. contest. Over 400 UYA members will be in attendance at tonight's game, courtesy of the Houston Astros.
The Astros Foundation will also host a Jackie Robinson Day reception from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m., including Mayor Turner, former Astros players, members of the media and participants and organizers of the Texas Diversity and Leadership Conference.
