After Major League Baseball originally planned a different giveaway for the first two games of the World Series this weekend at Comerica Park, MLB and the Tigers announced on Friday that they'll be giving away the towels after a surprising demand from the fans.
All fans at either game will receive a white Tigers World Series towel in addition to the MLB-sponsored giveaways: a coupon for a free Delphi XM RoadyXT radio plus a commemorative World Series pin at Game 1, and a DHL MLB Hometown Heroes DVD for Game 2. Delphi and DHL will sponsor the respective towel giveaways as well.
The towels became a staple at Tigers postseason home games the past two weekends, given away before each contest. The white versions became especially popular for the visual effect they had in the stands.
"Those waving towels out there," third baseman Brandon Inge said after Game 3 of the American League Championship Series last Friday night. "Every time [Kenny Rogers] got to a two-strike count, I thought I was going to pass out. The whole stands looked like they were swaying back and forth."
The Tigers were in charge of giveaway items at home games during the AL Division Series and ALCS. However, Major League Baseball handles those details during the World Series. As such, the towels were not expected to be part of the package, though the Tigers were encouraging anyone who already had a towel to bring it with them to the park anyway.
Now, their towels will be waiting.
"We are pleased that we were able to work with Major League Baseball and respond to our fans' enthusiastic demand for rally towels," Duane McLean, Tigers senior vice president of business operations, said in a statement. "The rally towels were a huge hit through the early rounds of the postseason. We know these towels will help Tigers fans show their support and enthusiasm throughout the World Series!"
