PEORIA, Ariz. -- Mariners center fielder Leonys Martin missed Friday's Cactus League game against the Rockies after flying to Miami to be with his wife for the birth of their second child, but he's expected to rejoin the team on Saturday for their final spring game.
"Everything is great," Servais said of Martin. "He's something else. I probably got four calls from him yesterday. 'Skip, Skip, I don't know if I'm going to make it up for the game.' I said, 'It's OK, Leonys. We've got you covered.' He was excited and everyone is healthy."
Martin was acquired by the Mariners from Texas this offseason and will be the starting center fielder. Left fielder Nori Aoki moved over to center field for Friday's game and will play some regular-season games in that spot when Martin sits out against tough left-handed starters.
The Mariners also played without right fielder Seth Smith, who has been sidelined since Sunday with tightness in his right groin muscle.
Smith has hit .541 this spring (20-for-37) with one homer, two triples and four doubles. Manager Scott Servais hoped to have him back in the lineup Friday, but he was scratched about 90 minutes before the game and replaced by Daniel Robertson.
• Servais said utility infielder Luis Sardinas would play in center field and at first base in backup situations as needed, even though the 22-year-old had never played either of those positions until this spring and even then only got limited game action.
"I'm pretty comfortable playing him anywhere other than having him pitch or catch," Servais said. "He handles it. He doesn't get fazed by too much. I think for a young player, the questions he asks and how he looks at the game is really unique. I've been very impressed with him this spring and his mental aptitude for the game."
• The Mariners will see their fair share of left-handers in the first week of the regular season. The Rangers have southpaws Cole Hamels and Martin Perez lined up for the first two games on Monday and Tuesday, followed by right-hander Colby Lewis on Wednesday. The A's will throw lefties Felix Doubront in Friday's Safeco Field opener and Rich Hill on Sunday in that series finale, with A's ace right-hander Sonny Gray going on Saturday.
