Red Sox announce roster moves

Prior to today's game against the Baltimore Orioles at JetBlue Park, the Boston Red Sox made the following announcements:

  • Infielder Deven Marrero was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.


  • Infielder Josh Rutledge, first baseman/outfielder Allen Craig, outfielder Brennan Boesch, catchers Dan Butler and Sandy Leon, and right-handed pitcher Anthony Varvaro were reassigned to minor league camp.


  • Right-handed pitcher Carlos Marmol was released.


  • Right-handed pitchers Carson Smith and Brandon Workman, left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez, and catcher Christian Vazquez were advised that they will start the season on the disabled list.

Craig, Leon, Rutledge, and Varvaro will remain with the major league team through the club's exhibition trip to Montreal on April 1-2. Butler will remain with the major league team through Wednesday's split-squad games.

President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcements.

With these moves, the Red Sox now have 27 players in big league camp, including 26 players from the 40-man roster and one non-roster invitee.
