SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Seth Smith doubled twice and drove in three runs as the Mariners defeated the Rockies, 10-8, on Thursday in a Cactus League game filled with hits from both sides and early-inning errors from Colorado.
The game became disjointed in the top of the second, when starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood fumbled, then threw wildly on a Stefen Romero grounder to begin a streak of errors on three straight batters. Chatwood left after throwing 64 pitches in three innings, with seven hits and four runs, but just one earned.
"They [teammates] put up four runs for me in the first three innings, and I wasn't able to hold the lead," Chatwood said. "You never feel good about that. But in that second inning, they didn't barrel many balls up. Some bad breaks there.
"Still, you've got to be able to limit damage. I had two outs and gave up that double to Seth Smith. I had a chance to get out of that inning and keep us with the lead. I didn't do that."
Rockies lefty Yohan Flande saw his previously scoreless spring ruined by four runs on four hits in the fourth. Flande struck out four in two innings, to run his spring totals to 14 strikeouts in 10 innings.
Mariners starter Taijuan Walker yielded six runs on nine Rockies hits in 3 2/3 innings. Right-handed reliever Donn Roach, competing for a bullpen spot, held the Rockies scoreless on one hit in 2 1/3 innings -- with strikes on 17 of his 21 pitches.
Up next for the Mariners:Felix Hernandez makes his third Cactus League start and is expected to throw about five innings on Friday in a 1:10 p.m. PT game against the White Sox at Peoria Stadium. Seattle's ace threw four innings with three hits and a run against the D-backs last Saturday and will have one more outing next week prior to making his ninth Opening Day start in Texas on April 4. The game will be televised live on Root Sports and MLB.TV.
Up next for the Rockies: Lefty Jorge De La Rosa is hoping to bounce back from his last outing, when he gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings against the Giants, as he faces the Reds at 2:05 p.m. MT on Friday in Goodyear, Ariz., on MLB.TV.
