"He had a lot of at-bats yesterday so I don't know if it's the extra swings he's been taking, but he's just a little sore," Hale said. "Give him a couple of days just to take a blow. Doesn't seem to be anything too serious. Just soreness."
Since it was a B game, the lineups could be manipulated so Tomas hit leadoff in each of the seven innings, going 3-for-7.
Tomas was getting the extra work after starting out the Cactus League 0-for-5.
"I think when you start off and you don't feel right, the way you think you should feel, I think it's just a matter of trying to give a guy enough at-bats to feel that way," Hale said of what Tomas was focused on with the extra work. "So I don't know if it was any certain mechanic they were working on."
Tomas is battling Socrates Brito for the starting spot in left.
Brito has gotten a lot of playing time so far in camp as he tries to build on the positive impression he made after being called up last September.
"I'm trying to find a day to give him off," Hale said of how much Brito has played. "But he's in the competition for the left field spot. It's a good competition. So it will be interesting."
Brito was 3-for-6 heading into Monday's game and made an outstanding catch while crashing into the wall against the Dodgers on Saturday.
