Giolito headlines list of Nats' non-roster invitees

WASHINGTON -- Right-hander Lucas Giolito is one of 20 non-roster players who received invitations to Nationals Spring Training. Pitchers and catchers report to camp on Thursday.

Giolito is considered the Nationals' top prospect, according to The right-hander will have a chance to show his stuff as he participates in his first big league Spring Training. Last season, Giolito showed he was fully recovered from Tommy John surgery, going a combined 7-7 with a 3.15 ERA and 131 strikeouts in 117 innings -- 10.1 K's per nine innings -- for Class A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg.

Also invited to camp are pitchers Bronson Arroyo and Sean Burnett, outfielder Reed Johnson and infielder Matt Skole. Arroyo, who is best known for helping the Red Sox win a World Series title in 2004, joins the Nationals after spending the 2015 season recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Arroyo adds depth to Nationals

Burnett returns to the Nationals, where he spent four seasons, 2009-12, and posted a 2.81 ERA in 245 relief appearances. Burnett missed the 2015 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Following his initial stint with the Nationals, Burnett joined the Angels, where he posted a 1.74 ERA in 16 games while battling injuries.

Johnson spent last season with the Nationals and missed 131 games because of a foot injury. He returned to the active roster for the final week of the season and appeared in five of the final seven games.

Skole, who is considered the 22nd best prospect in the organization, will take part in his fourth Major League Spring Training in 2016. The power-hitting corner infielder led Washington's Minor League system in 2015 with 20 home runs and ranked second with 82 RBI.

Also receiving invites to Spring Training are pitchers Paolo Espino, Aaron Laffey, Nick Masset, catcher Jhonatan Solano, infielders Brendan Ryan and Scott Sizemore and outfielders Chris Heisey and Logan Schafer.

In addition, the Nationals extended Spring Training invites to pitchers Michael Brady, Erik Davis, Taylor Hill, Wander Suero and Austin Voth, infielder Jason Martinson and outfielder Tony Campana.
